Best Applications for Rough Terrain Cranes
There are many different types of cranes, and with good reason. The specific needs of a construction, maintenance, or demolition project will dictate which type of crane is required. 1 – Maneuverability
These mobile cranes are often mounted on oversized rubber tires that can get over many different types of terrain, as the name suggests. These cranes also offer four wheel drive, and typically crab steering, which allows the driver to move with excellent precision. The large wheels and excellent steering allow rough terrain cranes to move over dirt, gravel, rocks, and other rough surfaces.
They aren’t limited to uneven terrain, though, as these mobile cranes can easily be driven down a road or path to the next part of the jobsite. Keep in mind that, while the crane is capable of driving on the road, it may not be legal on many public roads, especially depending on the size of the crane. As an added layer of convenience, the operator can drive the crane and operate the boom from the same cab.
2 – Size
In addition to their phenomenal maneuverability, rough terrain cranes are often smaller than many other types of cranes. This means they can fit into small job sites and work effectively in tight spaces. The combination of size and maneuverability makes it possible for rough terrain cranes to reach just about any place they might be needed.
3 – Stability
Despite their relatively small size, rough terrain cranes have fairly high lift capacity. This is in large part thanks to the ability to create a sturdy base for more stability. Rough terrain cranes can leverage outriggers to maximize stability while lifting, which allows this type of crane to have a wide range of maximum lift capabilities.
When to Use a Rough Terrain Crane
As mentioned above, the biggest advantage of using a rough terrain crane is that it can reach places other cranes wouldn’t be able to. If your job site is especially uneven or difficult to navigate, a rough terrain crane might be the only option. Unfortunately, these particular cranes don’t have the same lift capacity as less versatile options like tower cranes.
